Question by ninedemonsgod: How do I blend in with the localist in Czech?
I will be going to Czech once again this summer. I know my way around, the economy, basic lanaguage, and other things. However I would like to know more so I can better blend in since I like to avoid american tourist and get known to people there more. What do I wear? What are some custom that many foreigner overlook? Any thing I should avoid saying?
Oh also I’m deaf so I usual communication with paper and pen, is that odd for the deaf in Czech? They seems to understand what was going on unlike american who never get clue!

I got a few tips. I live in Prague and I ALWAYS recognize tourists.
1) NEVER wear a photo camera on you. This is the number 1 sign of a tourist. If you indeed want to have a camera with you, carry it in your handbag, do not wear it around your neck.
2) Avoid carrying a map with you. It makes you look like you do not know where you are and therefore prevents you from blending in with the Czechs.
3) Try not to look awestruck at the beauty of Prague. I see this everyday. When I ride in a tram, the tourists around me look eagerly from side to side, trying to get a glimpse of Prague castle or other historical buildings. Try to look nonchalant, so that you look like Prague is nothing new to you. I do this “trick” all the time when I am in London, I try to look like I belong there. When I first saw Westminster Abbey in London, I was awestruck but I tried not to look like it.
4) Avoid carrying a large backpack with you when you are touring the city, a small handbag is just fine. Carrying a backpacks in the city centre looks a bit weird and tourist-like. Backpacks are suitable for a trip to the mountains, but not a modern city centre.
5) Most of all, try to visit less touristy things in Prague. It is very unlikely that if you visit Prague Castle you will meet local people. They usually hang around local pubs, local parks, many local Czechs also go for a walk in forests which are usually in the suburbs.
I hope my few tips helped and I hope you enjoy your visit to Prague. 🙂
