Can a 12 year old travel from the United States to Czech Republic or Frankfort Germany without a adult?

Question by georgia peach: Can a 12 year old travel from the United States to Czech Republic or Frankfort Germany without a adult?
My niece wants to visit her mother who nows lives in Czech Republic. The problem is that I can not take her. Will the airlines allow her to fly internationally by herself. I know if it was a domestic flight she could.

Yes she can. She will be an unaccompanied minor and you will pay a little extra due to the fact that she will be watched over by a designated person. Most likely a stewardess.

Yes , it is very common.Different airlines have different fees for it and child’s age can vary too. The youngest child that i know who fly internationally alone was 9 years old.

The problem lies with the flight companies. They have different policies on unaccompanied minor. Some don’t allow them to travel on anything else but direct flight, some allow them to travel by themselves once they reach 14 without having to buy the “unaccompanied minor” service. I have plenty of experience with United, they seem to have the most friendly service, they make sure the child is safe at all times plus kids over 14, who are really well traveled don’t have to put up with a stewardess behind their back and can go by themselves. After that I would recommend Delta. Always ask about unaccompanied minor policies before buying the ticket.
