Cities to visit in the Czech republic other than Prague?

Question by som3a14: Cities to visit in the Czech republic other than Prague?
I’m traveling to the Czech republic next Saturday and I’m staying there for a week. I’ve just realized I’ve made a great mistake by planning to stay the whole week in Prague because after some research I think that it’ll only take 3 or 4 days to capture the essence of the city. Unfortunately, it’s too late now to book transportation and stay in another country. So now I’m thinking of planning one or two one-day trips to other cities in the Czech republic. I’d love to get an informed opinion about other cities that are worth seeing in that beautiful country.

There are several options you can do, but it will depend if you will have own transportation, use travel agency or use public (train and bus).
The best city close by Prague is Kutna Hora. There you can visit truly medieval city with well preserved historical homes, churches, cathedral, and ossuary (the Bone Church of Sedlec). Kutna Hora is about 1 hour from Prague.
Other nice cities are in the southern Bohemia and Moravia, but they are bit far with less sporadic transportation and not easily accessible since they are off major highway. The most popular is Cesky Krumluv but bit touristy. There are other beautiful medieval cities as Tabor, Jindrichuv Hradec, Pisek, Trebon with well preserved medieval core. However, the best of all are numerous castles in that area like Hluboka, Zvikov, Orlik.
In Southern Moravia, there are nice cities like Znojmo, Mikulov, Jihlava and castles of Bitov and Vranov. Brno, second largest city in the country is also worth to visit if you have a time and want to see a life in large, but provincial city. Olomouc, three hours by train from Prague has second largest medieval core in the country after Prague and it was one the most important city in the medieval kingdom right after Prague.
Outside of Prague you can visit dozen or so castles from Karlstejn, Konopiste, Kokorin, Krivoklat, Cesky Stenberk, Veltrusy, Melnik, Zleby and list go on. You can ask in the hotel what would be the best to see without many tourist.
The last ideal spot to visit would be Karlovy Vary, which is the spa town and will help you to escape heatwave that is gripping the country.
